Mortgage Scam Mailers

Have you ever received a colorful postcard in the mail claiming to be from the mortgage company you used to finance the purchase of your home? In many cases, these postcards will list an abbreviated version of the mortgage company’s name so as not to break copyright laws, in addition to emphasizing that an immediate response is needed.

Here are a few red flags to look out for if you ever receive a similar postcard in the mail:

  • Contact number is not associated with the mortgage company.
  • The company name is abbreviated in a way that is not used by that company. For example, the card might list Mlend (Millennium Financial Group) as Millennium Fncl Grp. Mlend would never send out a mailer with the name abbreviated in that format.
  • The mortgage account number does not match the number associated with your mortgage.

If you ever receive a postcard similar to the one described, dispose of it the same way you would get rid of other junk mail. If you receive one that claims to be from Mlend, please call us at (301) 371-8850 with your questions. Please know that there are bad actors out there who will use any public information they can find about a mortgage to try to scam homeowners.
